Batam's Ports and Airport: Which Gateway Fits Your Cargo

Batu Ampar, Kabil, Tanjung Uncang or Hang Nadim? Each Batam gateway serves a different kind of cargo. Choosing the wrong one adds handling, cost and days.

Batam's Ports and Airport: Which Gateway Fits Your Cargo

Batam is an island, so every export and import crosses water or air. What surprises new shippers is how specialised the gateways are. Sending project cargo to a container terminal, or a container to a bulk jetty, creates unnecessary handling and cost.

Batu Ampar: the container gateway

Batu Ampar is the main international container port on the island. According to BP Batam's September 2025 release, the port handled the majority of Batam's container traffic - about 65% of 501,695 TEUs recorded from January to August 2025, a 15% increase over the same period the year before. International trade accounted for roughly 76% of that volume.

The port added five ship-to-shore cranes from 1 September 2025, which directly affects berth productivity and therefore how reliably a vessel keeps its schedule. Six direct-call services link Batam with China, Vietnam and Myanmar, and transhipment connections carry cargo onward to India. In practice, that means fewer boxes need to be routed through Singapore first.

Choose Batu Ampar for standard FCL and LCL containers, both domestic and international.

Sekupang: the passenger side

Sekupang is primarily the international ferry gateway, connecting Batam with Singapore and Malaysia. It is the right choice for people and for small, hand-carried consignments, not for commercial container volumes. If a supplier offers to "send it via Sekupang", confirm what they actually mean before agreeing.

Kabil and Tanjung Uncang: industry and heavy cargo

These areas serve the industrial estates and the oil and gas support sector. They handle bulk commodities, heavy equipment, project pieces and fabrication yard output - cargo that does not fit a container and does not need a liner schedule. Access roads and lifting capacity are built for that kind of load, not for palletised consumer goods.

If you are shipping a skid, a crane component or an oversized module, this is where the conversation starts. If you are shipping cartons, it is not.

Hang Nadim: the air gateway

Hang Nadim International Airport handles Batam's air cargo. A dedicated cargo terminal developed with InJourney Aviation Services has been part of the airport's expansion, which matters for electronics, medical goods, spare parts and perishables that cannot wait for a sailing.

Air freight from Batam reaches Singapore in well under an hour of flight time; the real elapsed time is collection, security screening, customs and the forwarder's cut-off. For shipments in the hundreds of kilograms, air is often cheaper than the inventory cost of waiting a week for a container.

A simple decision rule

  • Standard container, domestic or international - Batu Ampar.
  • LCL under about 13 CBM - Batu Ampar, consolidated.
  • Urgent, high-value or perishable - Hang Nadim by air.
  • Heavy, oversized or bulk - Kabil or Tanjung Uncang.
  • Passenger plus small hand-carried items - Sekupang.

How ISL Group helps

We operate across all of these gateways and will route your shipment through the one that fits the cargo rather than the one that is convenient for us. Send the cargo description, dimensions, weight and deadline, and we will confirm the gateway, the handling method and a realistic schedule.
